It’s been awhile since The Little Pony (BMW E36 318is) racked up some lap times in our local backyard (Sepang Formula 1 International Circuit). And what a backyard it is. The last couple laps it was hitting about 2:59 per lap, which isn’t exactly fast. So instead of seeing it sit wistfully on the sidelines every track day, I’ve decided to give it some tweaking.
The new parts and modifications will hopefully allow the little pony to graduate to be a little colt perhaps? Our target? Shave off 5 seconds.
The time attack will be taxing on precision, setup and of course, the weather condition.
I’ve given it a gearbox transplant (5-Speed Getrag Manual) along with a brand new air intake. The gearbox is 40kg lighter than the older box (that’s the equivalent of one Justin Bieber) and to top things off, I’ve slapped brand new sticky Continental tires on it.
5 seconds is an Everest to climb, so we’re just going to have to see whether a new gearbox, air intake and tires will be enough to get us to the peak.
