As superstitious as one may be, Michael Schumacher, the 7-time world champion wants to Nico Rosberg’s race number for the 2010 Formula 1 championship. Both will be driving for Mercedes GP but with Nico assigned No.3 by the FIA, this meant that Schumacher will be on route for No.4. Bild newspaper has revealed that Schumacher has asked Nico for a number swap.

This of course requires the approval of the FIA.

He is doing so because he believes that even numbers are unlucky for him. Odd numbers have been proven to be in favor of Schumacher as he won all 7 of his world championships racing odd numbered cars, once driving cars bearing No.3 and No.5 and five times in car No.1.

With these said, he is very much back in shape and will be testing in a Formula 1 car by February.

No.3 eh? What would Nico say to that! More beer?

Some say he is bored, and some say he is very much in need for speed, but most say that he is still the greatest driver. Returning from retirement is not a new thing, as many sporting greats have done so. That said, the word “returning” might just be the biggest risk a sporting guru will ever take. To retake glory or to loose all dignity.

Michael Schumacher signed a contract to return from retirement with Mercedes GP (Formula 1 of course). Mercedes GP was formerly known as Brawn GP, which lead Jenson Button to the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship. Ross Brawn will be leading the team and we know that the Schumi-Brawn partnership brings up a champion to a whole new level.

Michael will be piloting the Mercedes car alongside Nico Rosberg.

His return to Mercedes completes his career circle as he started out with Mercedes back in 1990 racing with in Group C sports car in DTM.

It’s in and it’s now, Michael Schumacher will be replacing Felipe Massa for the rest of the season along side with Kimi Raikonnen. With Massa out due to the injuries caused in Hungary, the 40 year-old 7 time champion will be replacing him.

“We have said before that it is possible that Michael Schumacher could return to help us out,” head of communications Luca Colajanni said ahead of the official announcement.

Schumacher is currently under-going serious training in order to be fully prepared to participate in the European Grand Prix on the 23rd of August. This will certainly be exciting!

“The most important thing first: thanks God, all news concerning Felipe are positive. I wish him all the best again. I was meeting this afternoon with Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo and together we decided that I will prepare myself to take the place of Felipe. Though it is true that the chapter Formula 1 has been closed for me since long and completely, it is also true that for loyalty reasons to the team I cannot ignore that unfortunate situation. But as the competitor I am I also very much look forward to facing this challenge. Ultimately I like challenges and this is a great challenge,” said Michael Schumacher.

Luca Colajanni, a spokesperson Ferrari Formula 1 Team says:

“We have said before that it is possible that Michael Schumacher could return to help us out… We have two test drivers at Ferrari (Luca Badoer and Marc Gene) at the moment and Michael is an advisor. We have not spoken to him, but it is possible that this might happen. But we will have to wait and see what happens. It is something for (Ferrari team principal) Stefano Domenicali to consider over the coming weeks.”

It does make sense for Michael to return (temporarily) into the cockpit, we still know that he is unarguably the best driver that Ferrari ever got. For Michael to take on Massa’s seat, that’s going to be really interesting. A fight between Kimi Raikonnen and Michael Schumacher, the Finnish and the German again (Hakkinen VS Schumacher).
